Cat of the Month, 01/08: Alex

alex_mug.jpg

Alex is our big old fella, around eighteen years old, weighing in at sixteen pounds. In the winter he spends most of his day soaking up the heat from the heating vent, snoozing. He grumpily tolerates his old friend Muffy, who loves to snuggle with him.

Alex in the Yarn Basket
Alex is a tabby with beautiful markings on his face. I keep thinking I need to do a portrait of him from his younger days. Recently he discovered my big yarn basket in a sunny spot on the floor, and he couldn't resist. Out went some of the yarn and in went Alex. The big round basket fit his big round body just right.

Show at Brown County State Park

I recently participated in a small craft show at the Abe Martin Lodge at Brown County State Park. The show is held every year in conjunction with the park's Winter Hike. Due to the sudden cold snap we were having (after just basking in temps in the 60's) I wondered if I'd spend the day stifling yawns at my table- the visitors having stayed home to keep warm.

Instead I was pleasantly surprised. Dozens of brave souls bundled up and hiked the snow dusted hills, bright with sunshine with temps in the teens. Plenty of folks came to the craft show- some actually came to see me and my latest creations. It was so nice to meet people who like my art, who have it in their homes. I confess I get attached to my paintings, and like to know they've gone to a good home when they sell. I met some folks who already knew my work, and made new contacts too. Every time I do a show I hear stories of people's cats, which I really enjoy. So nice to know I'm not the only crazy cat person out there.

Meeting all these nice folks at shows and hearing their comments and stories just reaffirms my decision to be a full-time artist, and to keep painting those cats!
