Well, they both bite, so they have that in common as well. Sparky is big and beautiful, and he knows it. He walks around with his fluffy tail floating along behind him and poses strategically in sunny windows so his white ruff is lit up. Unfortunately he has lost a front upper fang, sometimes giving him a demonic, sneering look when his upper lip gets caught by his lower fang. He’s fairly sociable and would be happy to be carried around like an infant prince all day. Like some royalty, he has his mood swings and is also happy to sink his teeth into you when he feels like it.

Pogo (who you will meet later) is Sparky’s pal; they often snuggle together in the window seat at the top of the stairs, or wash each other’s face on the bed. One day I was sharing the window seat with them, looking through a book on Monet—seeking inspiration. I took a break, laying the book down, and came back to find Pogo resting his head on it. So the book inspired me, though not quite as I had planned. The result is “Monet’s Cats” which I feel is one of my very best works. You can also see this pair in “A Quiet Moment Between Two Friends” as they keep watch over the backyard.

The show is comprised of works by David Seward, JC Fang and myself. Twenty of my paintings are included, plus prints and note cards. It’s a really nice show, if I do say so myself. JC Fang does beautiful pictures of birds (and other subjects) and David Seward works in oils to create textured landscapes. I’ve got a variety of works there—a shaded country road, a sunlit still life, a snoozing cat. One of my personal favorites is the moonlit path that leads back through our woods. Stars hang overhead, and fireflies drift by, while the fog slowly rises from the hidden creek. You can almost hear the frogs and crickets.

There are art galleries and craftspeople, gift shops, and peace and quiet. The people are super nice too! Take a drive through the lush countryside—admire the old barns and sleepy cows along the way—and stop for lunch at the Red Geranium—or there’s a great place just around the corner from the Hoosier Salon gallery with tin ceilings and reasonable prices (their name escapes me of course)—then tour the town. There’s a maze and an open air church with sculptures, and just lots of interesting things to see. I was really honored to be asked to exhibit my work there!

She was one of three feral kittens we tried to capture and tame, having success with two. Sage looks like a miniature Maine Coon cat—long hair, tabby markings, fuzzy feet. She’s a shy kitty, friendly with us but quick to remind us of her wild side with a fast paw packed with claws.

When we still lived in Spencer, before we had much success taming her and getting her inside, Sage disappeared the day of her appointment to be spayed. She returned sometime later, ill and obviously pregnant. She had her kittens on the front porch and was so weak that she made no protest when we moved her and her little family of three into our bathroom. We helped her care for her kids, and she grew to trust us. We did get her to the vet’s to be spayed and get her shots—while there she escaped into the waiting room, pulled down the curtains, knocked over potted plants—basically trashed the place. She bit through their leather X-ray gloves when they captured her. They politely let us know she wouldn't be welcome back!

Sage’s kittens all stayed with us—Sparky, Smokey, and Pumpkin. Her brother, Sydney, was with us for too short a while, he died of feline AIDS. Sage is a reserved cat, deigning to be petted on her terms. She has a funny manner of sometimes stretching her hind leg out behind her, like a ballerina. In the evenings she’ll often join us on the couch, giving us a brief, regal visit.

I read every horse story I could find—happily transported to the fields of Wyoming or the dusty race tracks of Kentucky. Joining up this passion with my other love—art—I learned to draw horses pretty well, from the delicate Arabians to the sturdy Belgians. But in the years since I’ve taken up painting I haven’t had much opportunity to put horses in my work—until now.

We have new neighbors! And nice ones too. We've been so blessed to have good neighbors all around us, people I truly feel are our friends. Now we have new neighbors to the west—Tom, Sue and their sons Nick and Tony. They have four (soon to be five) horses. Lucky for us the horses hang out in the field behind our house, a short stroll away. And there’s a delicate Arabian mare and a sturdy Belgian gelding, plus a Mustang and an Appaloosa! I’ve seen the Belgian galloping along the fence with his blond mane flowing out behind him and I’ve seen the trio of the other horses peacefully grazing in the evening light. So I can’t wait to get started on some new paintings.

It’s a unique little place tucked around the corner, a tiny bit off the trodden path on Jefferson Street. The two-story white frame house once belonged to the town’s doctor who had his office on the first floor. The place exudes history that you won’t find in slick city galleries.

But the heart of this gallery are Joe and Charlotte Gore, the artists and owners of this little gem. Everyone who stops in is greeted as an old friend, which many of the visitors are. Over the years, Joe and Charlotte have strived to fill their gallery with art and fine crafts that are unique to their corner of Nashville. Much of the art is produced by local artists, myself included.

A visitor to the gallery can find on any given day: ceramics (including wall vases suspended from fanciful swirls), gourd art, mosaics, jewelry, textiles, baskets and birdhouses. And of course paintings done in watercolor, oil, acrylics, and mixed media. That’s just scratching the surface. You really never know what you’ll find there; the inventory changes as artists bring in new treasures. Absolutely not to be missed are Joe’s photographs of the Southwest and local Indiana scenes, including a series of covered bridges portraits.

Okay, I admit it, one reason why I’m touting Gallery by the Green is because they have an awful lot of my stuff there. But obviously (hopefully) if you’ve found your way here it’s because you have some interest in my art and what I do. So what unique Monique treasures can you find at the gallery? Well, several paintings, prints and cards—many of which aren’t shown on my Web site, including tiny (2"X3") paintings! You’ll also find my hand-painted bookmarks, jewelry, and hand-painted wineglasses. With spring’s arrival, I delivered a bouquet of felted rose pins—they look great on a lapel or purse to add a dash of colorful whimsy. When the chilly winds blow, I bring in armfuls of thick, cozy scarves—hand crocheted with multiple yarns in an array of colors. Joe and Charlotte are amazingly willing to give most things I bring in a whirl—maybe they really believe in me as an artist, or could it be all the fresh eggs and flowers from my garden that I keep bringing them?

All kidding aside, Gallery by the Green is truly a unique gem in the hills of Brown County. No Made in China stickers here, just lots of honest to goodness real live art. And two super nice folks who can tell you all about it. So stop in and say hi!

Come again another day. We’ve had more than our share of rain lately. Some areas of Indiana received nearly 12" of the wet stuff. We were stuck in Fishers, Indiana at the Indiana Festival at Conner Prairie when the storm hit. The tent held up and the artwork survived, though the show was canceled Saturday. Sunday was beastly hot and windy, sales were not great.

After packing up, we headed home only to be met with roads that were closed due to flooding or damage. We meandered through back roads, witnessing flooded homes and barns and washed out fields. At last we made it home to our house, perched safely on a hill above the waters that had finally receded from the road. We were grateful to be safe, to know our family and neighbors were safe, but much sobered by the things we had seen and the knowledge that many had had so much damage to deal with and that some had lost their lives. Not for 100 years had Indiana seen such a flood.

The last few days have been beautiful, blue sky sunny days. After the rain and storms, I just want to soak up that blueness. Looking around at the paintings I’ve done, I realize I’m very drawn to that blue sky—it’s just filled with such hope and joy, though I suppose some people might think it’s odd to equate the color blue with happiness. It’s no wonder it keeps showing up in my art, I guess it’s my way of sharing the elation I find in that expanse—one blue sky above us—as Pete Seger says. My brother once commented that I must go through a lot of blue paint—I suppose I do, just spreading the love!

Here is her story... Several years ago while living in Spencer, Indiana, my husband and I took a walk down near the railroad tracks not far from our home. I seem to remember there was a small craft fair or something going on at the time. On the way back home, we discovered a skinny grey kitten entertaining a handful of people on the corner. She rolled around inviting belly rubs, just too charming to resist.

An informed young girl let us know the kitten was a stray and shared her fear that the kitten may wander off and fall into the nearby river. Hindsight tells me that of course the kitten would not have carelessly fallen into the river to be swept away. But we were easily swayed and scooped up the ball of grey fluff and took her home.

Later watching her sleep, we agreed she looked just like the railroad cat Chessie and that’s how she acquired her name. It didn’t take long for Chessie to fit into our household of kitties. As a youngster she developed a curious manner of flinging an arm over the shoulders of any nearby cat and vigorously licking the top of the other cat’s head. In her slightly crankier old age she’s more likely to swat than lick any nearby cat!

After the death of my beloved lap cat, Abby, I wondered which of our cats would step up to take over the evening lap-time ritual. That cat was Chessie—every evening after dinner she arranges her not so tiny self (the kittenish figure is long gone) on my lap for a few hours, stretching out her paw to touch my arm every now and then to remind me that hands are for chin rubbing, okay?

Unable to control his boundless energy and enthusiasm, Rudi insisted on being featured. The cats, particularly Chessie who was next in line, are understandably disgusted.

But who could resist Rudi's charm and smiling brown eyes? We couldn't when we saw him at the Brown County Animal Shelter. He was discovered with his sister by two ladies working at a restaurant in Nashville. At the shelter he was christened Cobbler because when the ladies brought him in he was covered in the blueberry variety of the dessert. We fell for his sweet nature and quickly signed the adoption papers.

The cats have not been pleased with this new member of our family, but Rudi is gradually fitting in. He's discovered the joys of long walks (his nose never stops exploring) and splashing in the pond on a warm day. And we've discovered the fun of playing fetch and trying to avoid those wet doggy kisses.

A note about the Brown County Humane Society: we found the shelter clean and the animals well cared for. The staff was helpful and patiently answered my many questions. I was overall impressed and pleased with our experience there—it must be a huge amount of work and difficult at times.

A note about Rosie: she had her radioactive iodine treatment and is home now. The change in her is amazing—she is quickly regaining weight and has a great appetite. We're so glad she's healthy again! And I did sell a few paintings so that helped with the cost. :-)

I really love this museum, it’s a beautiful place and each time I’ve been there the people have been super nice. Hopefully I’ll be part of this year’s Winter Market, I'm looking forward to it.

I’ve done some more Brown County landscapes, a favorite subject I keep going back to. This winter has been particularly dreary, wet and grey. So with each hint of spring I cheer up a bit—the arrival of the robins and red wing blackbirds, the green grass and daffodils. Yesterday we finally had some sunshine and warmer temps. I was torn between painting and getting outside to work in the garden. I’ve been working on a series of Brown County landscapes, plus some more challenging still lifes—with several shows coming up I really need to keep my nose to the grindstone so to speak.

But it was actually sunny outside, not a cloud in sight and it was in the 50’s. I've been reading “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” by Barbara Kingsolver and my head was filled with visions of fresh broccoli, peas, onions and tomatoes. So the lure of open spaces won out and I ditched the easel for the garden. I worked on clearing the flower beds and hauled off a few wheelbarrow-fulls of compost material. I dug up two of the raised beds and had developed a back ache and a blister by the time I moved on to the third raised bed. And that was when I dug up the nest of baby bunnies.

I felt horrified! It was like a Twilight Zone episode—one minute every thing’s wonderful, the next it’s spun out of control with little bodies every where! They were tiny—their eyes weren’t open and their ears were small. None of them appeared to actually be injured so I carefully put them back in the small depression where their nest had been and covered them with the nesting material. Apologizing to them, to their mom, to God and Mother Nature, I gave up on gardening for the day and headed back to the house—taking care to shut the gate behind me to keep out curious chickens and ducks.

Today it’s back to being grey and chilly. It’s as if Mother Nature said “I give you a beautiful day and what do you do? Sheesh!” So today the easel is back out. The garden can wait a bit. But this weekend I think I will go to a garden show—surely there’s no harm in that?

So it’s fitting that Rosie is the Cat of the Month for April, as she has been given the chance of a new beginning.

Rosie is a small black short haired cat with big, luminous eyes. She has an elegantly shaped face, reminiscent of Egyptian feline sculptures. I discovered Rosie several years ago as an adult cat—emaciated, nearly dead with flies already buzzing around her. She barely weighed four pounds. Her outlook was bleak—I thought “Things don't look too rosy for you, girl.” And in defiance of that thought I named her Rosie. With care and lots of food she did recover, and it wasn't till some time later that we learned she is mostly blind and deaf.

Recently Rosie again dramatically lost weight and I feared she might have kidney failure. A visit to the vet's revealed good news and bad. The good news is that her kidneys appear to be fine—it turns out she has hyperthyroidism, which is treatable. The bad news is that the most effective treatment for this is horribly expensive—over $1200. This treatment involves a one time injection of radioactive iodine. The other options are surgery which often doesn’'t work, or medication every day for the rest of her life. I really felt like I had to give Rosie the best chance that I could—she’s overcome so much so far. So hopefully I’ll sell a few paintings this month and the bill won't be so painful!

She makes her presence known with first gentle then ever more insistent taps of her paw on my pant leg. Anytime I sit down (and I mean anytime, anywhere) it is clearly an invitation for her to sit on my lap. When I am painting, she’ll often sit on the table that holds my palette and paints, inching closer and closer to me til I’m close enough to be poked by her paw—claws gently extended. I’ll put her down on the floor, she hops back up, over and over.

So this time when I set up my canvas, I stopped every so often to take a picture. To keep it fairly simple, I've just included the basic progression. I started by mapping out what goes where- horizon line, tree, etc. Then I blocked in colors and shapes, eventually moving the tree a little and adding a second tree. When things were basically where I wanted them, I played with the sky- clouds, or no clouds? And I fine tuned the textures and details. The hard part was remembering to stop every so often to take a picture. Eric came up with a title, something I often have trouble with. Voila! All done.

In art history classes I was always fascinated with the clues that have been discovered about an art work's creation. X rays that reveal the drawing underneath and studies the artist did- showing changes and the evolution of the piece. These insights make the artist seem so real to me, so human. Sometimes the finished piece of work is so amazing that it's hard to imagine that initial blank canvas or block of stone. I don't think the clues we can discover diminish the magic of art, but instead bring us closer to it, and to the artist. So here's a little insight to this particular painting, a little insight to me and how I work.

I've often been asked if I sell my jewelry online, and now I'm pleased to say I do! I've recently opened a store on etsy.com. So far I only have a few things listed, but will keep adding to the inventory. Take a look—go to www.sleepycatstudio.etsy.com. It's been fun photographing the pieces in interesting places—like out in the woods where there's a beautiful mossy log which makes a great background. I have to be careful photographing pieces outside when the chickens are around—they're attracted to the shiny baubles! I can just imagine turning my back for a moment, then turning back to see retreating but fabulously decked out hens—showing off their finery to the ducks.

Other news—I'm so proud to have been accepted into the Women in Art market at the Eiteljorg Museum, in Indianapolis. The market will take place March 15th, 10AM–5PM, in the beautiful setting of the Eiteljorg—one of my favorite museums ever! I'll have a wide selection of brand new jewelry, as well as small paintings, and my hand painted wooden bookmarks. In honor of the Women in Art theme I'm working on a series of bookmarks picturing women—one is a lady painting, another is a gardener, etc. Many of the ladies are accompanied by a friendly feline—there's even a mermaid with a catfish! Hope to see you there!

The painting is 11X14, acrylic on canvas, and is a sunny pastoral view of sheep on a farm in southern Indiana. The gala will be held at 5:30PM, Saturday, February 23rd at Terry's Banquets and Catering—3124 Canterbury Ct, Bloomington, Indiana. 2008 marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Bloomington Montessori School. The Groovy Gala is the centerpiece of the year long celebration, featuring a retro-themed evening complete with music from the 60's and 70's, as well as dinner and a silent auction. Tickets are $65 each or a table of eight is available for $500. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact the school at (812) 336-2800.
