The Month of October

This October has been busy. October to Nashville is what Christmas is to the mall. Thousands of people converge on our little town like locusts, seeking carmel corn, fudge, fall color, and the latest Made in China thing that they have to have. A few discerning folks poke in the side streets and back roads, looking for real flesh and blood artists who offer genuine Made in Brown County stuff. Thankfully there are enough of those folks that a few of us continue to survive and even flourish here in the hills.

Yellowwood LakeI recently had a small solo show at the Brown County Art Gallery where I sold (drum roll, please) twelve paintings—I was amazed! So a big, grateful thank you to my supporters out there. If you missed that show, then stroll over to Gallery by the Green and see the show I have on there, up through November 15th. This show has quite a mixture of work in it. There are tiny paintings for folks who have small spaces, or small budgets, and larger pieces for folks who aren’t hampered by either. I’ve been busy painting lots of new stuff and it’s neat to see it come together in a show. I’m looking forward to a nice long winter where I can just paint and paint.

I recently saw the movie about Beatrix Potter and I think she’s a kindred spirit. I grew up with her books, just as I grew up with art and animals and nature. I am so inspired by her story and her success, and her strength of character. Who could ask for a better role model? So perhaps this winter, while the mice are rolling their hickory nuts around in the walls, I’ll get out my sketch book and do some drawing. I’d better put the kettle on—fancy a cup of tea?

October Cat of the Month: Pumpkin

Pumpkin, appropriately enough, is the Cat of the Month for October. She is the petite sister of Smokey and Sparky. Not orange as you might imagine from her name, she’s basically a short haired version of her mother, Sage. Soft brown tabby fur (our vet once described her as “juicy”) and little white toes that make me think of ladies’ elegant lace gloves that allow the fingertips to peek out.

Pumpkin is a sweet kitty, with a sneaky trick up her sleeve. She often gets my husband with this one—she lures him into picking her up (with sad but demanding meows) then she quickly climbs up over his shoulder, causing him to instinctively to bend forward. She then moves on to his back (by now he is bent over) and settles down, claws dug in. There she purrs and smiles smugly till I come to the rescue.

Sadly, Pumpkin was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism which has caused her to lose a lot of weight. With her we opted to try the medication route until we can spring for the radioactive iodine treatment that Rosie had. So far I don’t see much improvement but it’s early days. I’m mystified by this condition which seems to be on the rise and no one quite knows what causes it. It could be genetic, environment, diet, or a combination of factors. We did change the cats’ food a few years ago, which helped us avoid the tainted pet food, but now I can’t help wonder if the new food has brought issues of its own. So keep your fingers crossed for this tiny girl!
